End of Year Savings: Get Your Best Price on a New Vehicle Now

Rarely is buying a vehicle a simple, straightforward process. Usually, it involves a significant amount of research, deciding between a bevy of models, and determining how to work it in your budget while saving as much money as possible.

One factor that many consumers consider is when to buy a car. After all, there is a lot of information out there that suggests the optimal times for walking into a dealership, broken down by days of the week, months, holidays, and more. Though it’s hard to predict what kind of price you’ll get at any given time, there’s one stretch of time that proves to be a great time to buy a new vehicle: the end of the year.

Indeed, if you decide to make your big purchase as the year comes to a close, chances are pretty good that you’ll find at least some decent deals and probably some great ones. Of course, you don’t want to rush into a decision only to drive away in a vehicle that you later regret purchasing. Below, we’ll get into what makes the end of the year such a good time to buy a car, as well as some practical advice for ensuring it’s the right time for you.

Buying at End of the Calendar Year

As previously, mentioned, there are several times throughout the year when you can consistently find deals and incentives for a new vehicle. The end of any given month is often the best time to visit a dealership, especially if you get a salesperson who has yet to meet their quota for the month. This could leave them more likely to make a deal with you. As far as which months to buy a vehicle, October, November, and December are the best. This is because dealerships are trying to make room for new inventory of cars from the next model year. Plus, in November, you have Black Friday. Just like with retailers, this can be a big holiday for dealership sales and promotions.

By the time December comes around, the stage is set for a perfect storm of savings. Monthly, quarterly, and yearly quotas must be met by salespeople. And dealerships are more eager to move vehicles from the previous model year to stock their lots with the newest models available. And New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are bound to see some significant discounts.

Buying at the End of the Model Year

Indeed, one of the biggest advantages you have when shopping for a vehicle at the end of the calendar year is that dealerships are trying to make room for new stock. This means that they may be more willing to offer deep discounts on cars that are at the end of their model year. Not only can you score a great price on a new vehicle this way, but manufacturers often provide other incentives on outgoing model year vehicles to get them off dealer lots. These incentives could include anything from 0% interest to cashback offers to good lease deals.

The opportunities for savings at the end of a model year hold true whether or not the vehicle you are purchasing has undergone any significant design changes for the new model year. Dealers always find it easier to sell “next year’s model.” This is excellent news for you, as long as you don’t care about having the upgrades offered by next year’s model. After all, you’re still getting a brand-new vehicle!

Making Sure It’s the Right Decision

No matter how good of a deal you get on a new car, you want it to be the right financial decision for you and your family. Preparation is key here. You need to know your credit score so that you can estimate what kind of loan you will be able to get; loans with 0% interest, for example, are typically only available to buyers with good credit. You’ll also need to have a clear understanding of your overall financial standing so that you choose a vehicle and loan that you can afford in the long run. If you haven’t had the chance to prepare your finances, consider holding off until next year.

The end of the year is truly a great time to buy a new vehicle. Consider the benefits, and look over your finances so that you can make the best decision for you and your family. The Future of the Toyota Tundra: Expect Great Things

In the world of full-sized pickup trucks, there are a select few with histories of continued durability and power. Among these, the venerated Toyota Tundra has proven itself as a top contender by continually, year after year, supplying pickup truck drivers with something rough and tough, yet also something smooth and modern. What's next for the Toyota Tundra? Recently, Mount Airy Toyota found some interesting information out about what's in store for the Tundra—and the future looks pretty exciting!

Truck drivers shopping for a full-sized pickup usually have a specific reason for such a vehicle. These types of trucks are not for the casual truck driver. They are made to work well under serious conditions and to produce time and again. Full-sized trucks can pull and haul just about anything to anywhere, and right now, the Toyota Tundra is leading the market in big pickups.

Maybe it's because the Tundra handles as well as a smaller truck but packs a lot more power; or, maybe it's because stalwart V-8 engine it comes with—or even the hybrid V6. The truth is, the Tundra leads the pack for a number of reasons, and it's only going to get better.

What's Next For the Tundra?

Toyota likes to keep their information close to the chest, but we were able to glean some exciting news about the next versions of the Toyota Tundra. And even though we do not know exactly when the next generation of Tundras will arrive, we hope to see it this year or next. Production of the next Tundra generation will continue the full-sized truck's title as the oldest full-sized pickup truck on the market.

Though images of the newest version of the truck (the 2021 and the 2022 model versions) usually show the truck drabbed in cloth and stickers and anything that keeps the public from seeing its fresh face and body, a few of the truck's elements were impossible to hide. From what we saw, the grille to the truck is modernized with large horizontal slats that help maintain that rugged, tough feel the Tundra has always had.

The headlights look to be big LEDs, and the tires do not show size but sure look massive! Currently, 20-inch wheels are available on the Tundra, but there is a chance Toyota is wanting to go bigger to provide a more luxurious ride to the Tundra. This would make sense, as the Tundra is in constant competition with other luxury truck brands, such as Ford, RAM, and GM, all of which are going the way of a chunkier tire.

What is really exciting is the rumors of a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 hybrid version of the Tundra, which would serve as a perfect competitor to the all-new Ford F-150 PowerBoost.

Tundra—The V6 Hybrid Version

It can be difficult to weed through all the anonymous tips leaked about the next generation of Tundras. Not everything shared and read is true, and some information may change over time, but one thing we have heard over and over from reliable sources is that there will be an optional 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine that will receive extra power from some sort of electric component. This engine could produce around 450 horsepower and something close to 500 pound-feet of torque.

With the addition of a hybrid model, the Toyota Tundra will change its global truck platform to a code of "F1." This code indicates that a truck has hybrid components that help lower greenhouse gas emissions, something that the execs at Toyota's headquarters have been hinting at considering for some time now. The option of a hybrid full-sized Tundra would be a big move for the brand. Right now there are only two engines offered with the Tundra: a 4.6-liter, V8 that has 310 horsepower and 327 pound-feet of torque; and a 5.7-liter V8 with 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. Additionally, the 5.7-liter engine offers E85 flex-fuel capability.

How did Toyota come up with the idea for this type of hybrid engine for the Tundra? Well, as mentioned earlier, Toyota execs have been hinting at the idea for a hybrid Tundra, and apparently, they have had their eyes on the Lexus LS 500, which runs on a very similar type of hybrid engine.

This is good news because car enthusiasts now have a model to base the engine's performance on—and the Lexus LS 500's engine has done quite well. The Lexus sedan uses a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 (just like the new Tundra is rumored to have) that offers 416 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. What's interesting is that the LS 500 uses a naturally-aspirated 3.5-liter V6 that makes 295 horsepower and 257 pound-feet of torque completely on its own. The inclusion of the electric motor allows for an additional 177 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, but it does so without drinking up all the vehicle's fuel.

If the new Tundras do indeed come with an optional hybrid engine, swapping what is offered now (a 6-speed automatic for a 10-speed automatic) could offer incredible savings at the gas pump—possibly even up to 30 miles to the gallon.

A Quick Comparison

No matter what Toyota decides to do with the next generation of Tundras, it is worth looking at what the Tundra has accomplished so far. And what better way to do that than to set the Tundra up, side by side, with another famous contender, the GMC Sierra.

Which is the more reliable, the faster, the longest-lasting, the better truck? The GMC Sierra or the Toyota Tundra? This question is leaving full-sized pickup truck drivers in a bit of a pickle lately, as both trucks have been cited as two of the best in their class.

If you are able to reduce the many full-sized pickup options out there down to the GMC Sierra and Toyota Tundra, you have probably done your research. But, there are a few extra questions you can ask yourself to help make this decision a little easier if you are currently in need of a worthy full-sized truck.

Question 1: What kind of power do you need? Both trucks are incredibly tough, but they have their differences. With the Tundra you get more speed, as it is capable of going from 0-60 in just 6 seconds! (Hard to believe a big truck can get going that fast, but it's true—the Tundra does it with ease.) There's just no ignoring it, the Tundra moves well for such a large vehicle.

The GMC Sierra, however, has an engine that is able to deliver up to 420 horsepower and 460 pounds-feet of torque, but it doesn't quite have the speed. Since the Tundra already offers almost as much in terms of horsepower and torque, the additional speed takes it over the top for us. Power and speed working together, that's the kind of truck that gets things done.

Question 2: What sort of features do you like best? Both trucks are leaders among their peers in technology, but these features vary between the two. The Tundra comes with Toyota's Entune app suite, which includes Bluetooth, music, and mobile apps. The Tundra also comes standard with a rearview camera and is packed full of safety features and additional technology for those techy truck drivers who are looking for something great for towing and navigating through tuff terrain all-the-while using the most up-to-date technology on the market.

The GMC Sierra comes with the respected IntelliLink system, which allows a wireless 4G LTE hotspot, and can connect up to seven mobile devices. There are options for more technology and safety features, but we found that the Tundra simply offers more.

Whether you are looking to buy now or you plan on waiting to see what the next generation of Toyota Tundras reveals, Mount Airy Toyota is the place to find out everything you need to know. Not only are we up on all the latest gossip about the next Tundras, but we also have a plethora of current Tundra trucks for you to choose from. Come see us today, schedule a test drive, and find that perfect full-sized pickup for you.

The Best Road Trip Playlists, Stations and Music-Streaming Platforms for 2020

Nothing beats cruising down the road with your windows down, blaring your favorite music as you let go of all your worries for just a moment. OK, so if your road trip is taking place during winter, the windows-down part might not be a thing. But the music can still happen!

There are countless playlists and stations that span across various music platforms for streaming and listening, and it can be difficult to know which are the best ones. After all, analyzing all of them would take hours upon hours, and you probably have plenty of other things to focus on as you plan your road trip. That’s why we’ve done the heavy lifting for you. Below, we’ll discuss some of the best playlists and stations we’ve found and cover the benefits of using four of the most popular streaming/listening platforms—SiriusXM, Pandora, and Spotify.

THE BEST PLAYLISTS AND STATIONS OF 2020

Before you determine which music platforms to use for your road trip, let’s see a little bit of what each has to offer:

SiriusXM

There are well over a thousand stations on SiriusXM, so the ones that you listen to will depend on the type of music and entertainment you enjoy most. If you like listening to modern Top 40 music, stations like The Pulse and SiriusXM Hits 1 might float your boat. You can also choose pop music stations by the decade, such as ‘50s on 5, ’60s on 6, ‘70s on 7, and so on.

If rock music is more your speed for traveling, check out Classic Rewind, Lithium, or Alt Nation. For hip hop fans, stations like Hip Hop Nation and The Heat are very popular, as are The Highway and Willie’s Roadhouse for country listeners. There are also plenty of stations that cater to other types of genres like dance/electronica, talk, and sports.

Pandora

With Pandora, you can either stream current radio schedules or record shows for listening later. And there are a lot of great shows and stations for enjoying either of these functions. For instance, Family Road Trip Radio is perfect for those with children in tow, as it offers a mix of pop, rock, reggae, classic rock, children’s music, and other genres. Country Road Trip Radio plays songs from Thomas Rhett, Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, and other top country artists. And if you’re looking for a great sing-along experience with others in the vehicle, try Lip Sync Road Trip Radio, which plays everything from Queen to The Fugees.

Spotify

Spotify is strictly a music-streaming service, which means that you listen to whatever song you like at any time, rather than having to wait for a song to come on or record a show. While there are millions of songs to choose from, maybe you would rather sit back and enjoy the work that curators have put into their playlists. Indie Rock Road Trip contains songs from Local Natives, Vampire Weekend, Freedom Fry, and other popular indie artists. The Road Trip playlist is tailored more for college-age drivers with the likes of Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, and Charli XCX controlling the waves. And Rockin’ Road Trip will provide you with songs by artists like ZZ Top, Bloc Party, and The Wild Feathers.

THE BEST MUSIC PLATFORMS

Now that you have an idea of what each of these platforms has to offer in terms of music and entertainment, let’s briefly look at their benefits:

SiriusXM

The biggest advantage of using SiriusXM is that, unlike Pandora and Spotify, you don’t need to use data or download content. It works just like traditional radio except there are more options—like, a lot more options.

Pandora

Pandora offers both a free and premium option for users. The free service allows you to create playlists and curate your stations over time, though you will have to deal with ads and you can only skip six songs per hour.

With Pandora Plus ($4.99/month), you don’t have to worry about ads and you can skip as many songs as you like, as well as rewind songs. And if you want to go all the way, choose Pandora Premium ($9.99/month), which allows for unlimited mobile playback and customizable playlists, among many other features.

Spotify

Spotify also allows users to create a free or premium account. When it comes to radio functions and discovering artists, Pandora has the upper hand. But Spotify generally offers more in every other category. For example, the free Spotify service allows you to listen to any song you want on-demand (though you’ll still have ads). If you upgrade to Spotify Premium ($9.99/month), you can listen to almost any song you can think of in top-notch sound quality, you don’t have to sit through ads, and you can listen offline.

Conclusion

When you’re in the midst of planning your road trip, don’t forget to prepare for your music and entertainment along the way. Look into SiriusXM, Pandora, and Spotify to determine which platform(s) will most enhance your travels, and consider the stations and playlists mentioned here. Finally, keep researching because there are a plethora of stations and playlists that might be the perfect fit for you and your family!

This is why we are offering a battery replacement only at $95.95, which includes installation, a 60-month warranty, and an 18-month free replacement.
  • Wiper Blade Replacement. With cold weather approaching, you can count on icy roads, which results in salt and sludge. Nothing makes your windshield wipers work harder than dirt and grime buildup. • Brake Pad Inspection. Needless to say, your brakes are important. At Mount Airy Toyota, we can take a look at your existing brakes and let you know about how much longer you have until you will need new pads. As you can tell, we have amped our service specials for this year, and we’re pretty excited about it.

Stay in Control: How to Drive in Winter Weather

Winter snow can be beautiful and a lot of fun. But when it comes to driving in it there are many potential dangers that, if prepared for in advance, can be avoided. This being said, it is shocking how many drivers do not prepare themselves for these possibly treacherous conditions. Here are two basic rules that can keep you safe while driving this winter season:

  1. Anticipate what is ahead. Driving on ice and snow requires smooth, precise, and careful control of the steering wheel. Try and keep your wheels straight as much as possible, and when you do have to turn, slowly turn the wheel—this will require you to anticipate turns ahead of time so that you do not end up sliding into other lanes, or worse, off the road. Just remember, you want to avoid any sharp movements of your vehicle. Slow and steady gets you there safely.
  2. Know your stopping distances. Slowing down, for upcoming turns or otherwise, requires much more distance when driving on snow or ice. Be sure that you have clear visibility of road signs, stoplights, and other cars so that you can break well before you reach them. When you do apply the brakes, keep your heal on the floor and softly press the brake peddle with the ball of your foot. Again, try and keep your steering as straight as possible to avoid any skidding. If you do happen to hit a patch of ice and feel the vehicle begin to slip, start pumping the brakes by letting off the peddle and pressing (softly) it back down over and over until you regain control of the vehicle. If this does happen, be sure to remain calm and keep your movements soft and slow.

With braking and steering under control, drivers can navigate through snow and ice in a controlled and safe way. A word to the wise though, beware of other drivers who do not know these two rules—you can recognize them by their jerky movements and inability to keep from skidding—and keep as much distance between you and them as possible.

The Toyota RAV4

Recently, AMCI conducted certified tests to see which vehicles operated at the highest levels while driving in the ice and snow. Many vehicles were chosen for these tests, but only a few were tough enough to make it to the top of the list. So who made it? There were a variety of vehicles that did well, but performing best in acceleration, traction, and handling in these treacherous conditions was the all-wheel-drive Toyota Rav4.

What really impressed the judges at AMCI was the Rav4’s ability to go from 0 to 50 mph quickly on snow, and with minimal slippage. It was also able to stop short on ice while going 30 mph. But that’s not all: the Rav4 continued to pique interest by showing top cornering performance on snow, as well as providing top of the line evasive-action performance.

These top markings for the Rav4 are due to Toyota’s highly innovative AWD technology, which includes the intricately designed Dynamic Torque Control system. This system, along with the electric power steering mechanisms, helps enhance the driving experience by monitoring and controlling torque transfer between wheels—all four of the wheels—and uses input from a variety of sensors to keep the vehicle moving.

There’s no doubt about it, taking care of your car, especially during the winter months, is crucial. But, at Mount Airy Toyota, we realize it is just as important that we take care of ourselves. Why the 2020 Toyota Highlander is the Ideal Fall Family Vehicle

Since its arrival in the 2006 model year, the Toyota Highlander has consistently been a favorite among family drivers. The 2020 version of the midsize SUV builds on this reputation with an all-new design that leaves little to be desired. Along with sleek and beautiful style, it provides plenty of function—a blend well-known to Toyota fans and one that bridges the gap between ultimate luxury and affordability.

The three-row SUV can comfortably seat seven or eight passengers. Consumers can choose between five trims—from the base L (which includes an eight-way power-adjustable driver seat and eight-inch infotainment touchscreen, among other luxuries) to the Platinum (which sports features like heated second-row seats, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, and surround-view camera). There’s also a hybrid version that is the most climate-friendly vehicle on the market. And of course, any model you go with will have inherited Toyota’s notorious resale value.

Below, we’ll discuss some of what’s new with the 2020 Highlander as well as some of the features that are returning. That way, you can decide for yourself if it’s the vehicle for your family this Fall!

The New

As popular as the 2019 Highlander was, the 2020 models see some impressive improvements. Along with the power-adjustable driver’s seat and eight-inch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility now come standard. Also, more safety features, like road sign recognition, are standard, and a 12.3-inch screen is a new option. Moreover, Toyota has added cargo room to the 2020 Highlander, which includes 6.1 extra cubic feet behind the second row and 2.2 more behind the third row.

Powertrain, Performance, and Fuel Economy

The 2020 Highlander is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 295 horsepower—including the base model, which came with a four-cylinder in previous years. This V6 engine is matched with an eight-speed automatic transmission. All models come standard with front-wheel drive with all-wheel-drive as an option. Acceleration is not a problem for the Highlander, the handling is stable, and the ride is especially smooth for a midsize SUV.

New for 2020, you can choose between two variants for the Highlander Hybrid. One is an all-wheel-drive setup where the rear wheels are powered by an electric motor. The other is a front-wheel-drive setup. Each is joined by a four-cylinder engine and a continuously variable transmission (CVT), and 35 to 36 MPG can be expected.

There is much debate about whether or not it’s worth the money to go with a hybrid vehicle. When it comes down to it, the Toyota Highlander is a great choice, whether you choose a gas-powered or hybrid model. The former may save you some money upfront, while the latter may save you money in the long run. So, it really comes down to how long you plan on driving the vehicle and how important fuel efficiency is to you.

Safety Tech

Toyota has a reputation for offering some of the best safety technology on the market, and they have kept pushing the boundaries with the 2020 Highlander, which comes with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 on all models. This suite of features includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and adaptive cruise control. Also included is a lane-departure warning with Lane Tracing Assist—a signature Toyota feature that helps the vehicle stay in the middle of the lane when cruise control is engaged. Front and rear parking assists, blindspot monitoring, and rear-cross traffic alerts are available on the higher trims.

Prices

Even though there have been significant improvements made for the 2020 Highlander models, the pricing hasn’t been increased much. The L starts at $34,600 MSRP (and an extra $1,120 for destination). The LE and XLE begin at $36,000 and $39,600, respectively. That leaves the top two gas-powered models: The Highlander Limited comes in at $43,650 while the Platinum starts at $46,850. On the Hybrid side of things, you have the $38,200 LE front-wheel-drive and the $48,250 Platinum all-wheel-drive. And remember, the unmatched resale value that comes with a Toyota purchase must be considered.

Conclusion

When it comes to family-friendly SUVs, the 2020 Toyota Highlander is hard to beat. Not only does the all-new design make a bold-yet-tasteful statement, but it provides some of the best performance, fuel economy, and safety you could ask for in a midsize SUV. While the Highlander has long been a great vehicle, there’s no question that the changes made for 2020 have taken it to the next level. We recommend coming by Mount Airy Toyota to see for yourself!

It’s Tire Month at Mount Airy Toyota!

Worn, old, or even cheaply-made tires can be hazardous to your vehicle’s handling and fuel efficiency, not to mention it is incredibly dangerous to drive with bad tires: a blow out while driving is sure to turn your knuckles white as you grip the steering wheel to try and navigate your vehicle to the side of the road. Luckily, Mount Airy Toyota’s Service Center can get you the exact replacements you need and at a very competitive price.

Our factory-trained and certified Toyota technicians will ensure that your tires are mounted, balanced, and inflated to match your Toyota vehicle's specifications.

What makes November tire month? With that hot summer behind us and a cold winter ahead of us, this is the most important time to check your tires. Drastic seasonal change means drivers need to be sure their tires can handle the cooling weather. During those hot spring and summer months, your car’s tires were worn and stretched from changes in air pressure, and extreme heat—like what we experience here in the South—tends to cause dry rot.

Before your next car ride, complete the following steps to make sure you don’t end up stranded:

  1. Check the tire pressure and if any are low get them filled right away. If a tire, or tires, are extremely low we recommend not driving it unless there is a service station nearby. Otherwise, it’s a good idea to have someone come and fill your low tires.
  2. Have your tires rotated regularly. Our service department can keep your tires lasting as long as possible with regular rotations and check-ups.
  3. Have your tires professionally aligned. Anytime you get new tires or have been driving on the same ones for a year or so, it’s a good idea to have them checked and aligned.
  4. Keep an eye on the tread of each tire. (More on this in a minute.)
  5. Make sure your spare is in good repair. You hope to never need your spare, but if the time ever comes when you do need it, make sure it is full and ready for use.

Do I Need New Tires?

The Penny Test just got a lot more expensive; time for the Quarter Test. If you aren’t aware of the Penny Test, this was a method used to check the tread in tires to see if they need replacing. The test is taking a penny, turning it upside down so the top of Honest Abe’s head is pointed towards the car tire’s tread. Press the penny between the rows and see how much of his head is visible. The more of his head you can see, the better the chance you need new tires.

This test is still a valid way to check your tires, but instead of using a penny, it has been found that a quarter is more accurate at finding the standard minimum depth of 4/32.”

Winter Tires

Not everyone needs snow tires, but anywhere there is a possibility of ice or snow—even the slightest chance—we advise looking into purchasing a set. They don't have to be incredibly expensive, and they can help keep you safe on the road this winter. With their intricate designs and soft rubber, they grip the ice and snow for better traction.

This winter we like the Nokian Hakkapelitta. They start at around $120 per tire and are worth every penny. With Nokian, you get superior performance, especially on ice, but great traction through the snow as well. Nokian has a long history with winter tires, and creates a great one for a good price—$120 may seem a little high, but believe me, those prices can get much higher.

If you want to pay a little less, you should look at either the Bridgestone Blizzak WS80 or the Michelin X-Ice X13. Both are noted as being equally effective in winter conditions and are highly recommended for anyone who lives in areas that drop in temperature to below 45 degrees. With a price of $85 they are more than affordable, and if taken care of, will last at least three to four seasons.

Lastly, you can’t go wrong with a General Altimax Arctic. Though this suitable tire is not noted as being quite up to par with the Nokian Hakkapelitta, or the Blizzak and X-Ice, it still comes highly recommended by experts and owners alike. At around $50, it’s the best snow tire for the price, and a great option for those living in areas that don’t get a lot of snow, but do experience a little ice in the winter.

Stay safe this winter by switching into snow tires. Take good care of them with routine check-ups and change them out when needed. You won’t regret it.

Sure winter snow can be beautiful and a lot of fun. But when it comes to driving in it there are many potential dangers that, if prepared for in advance, can be avoided. This said, it is shocking how many drivers do not prepare themselves for these possibly treacherous conditions.

If you do happen to hit a patch of ice and feel the vehicle begin to slip, start to pump the brakes by letting off the peddle and pressing (softly) it back down over and over until you regain control of the vehicle.

It’s Time For an Upgrade: The 4Runner vs. The Rav4

The Toyota 4Runner and Toyota RAV4 have been two of America’s favorite SUVs for years, and with new upgrades and features, the popularity of these sleek sport utilities won’t wane any time soon.

You know when it’s time for an upgrade: various portions of your vehicle’s interior are warped and broken—some knobs and sections of armrests are completely missing; there’s that loud clunking sound that you’ve had checked out but nobody can seem to find what it is so now it serves as an embarrassing reminder that you have an old car. The paint is faded, the CD player stopped working years ago, and there’s that strange smell you can’t seem to get rid of. Yeah, it’s time.

Or maybe you already have a 4Runner or RAV4, and you love it, but you would also love to ride in something that sports new features and upgrades; maybe even try and different trim level. Regardless of your reasoning, if you are feeling the pull, Mount Airy Toyota has you covered with all the best trim levels of the Toyota RAV4 and 4Runner.

The RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 has always been an eye-catcher since it was designed well from the start: it serves as the 4Runner’s little brother with sleek curvature outside that leads to roomy space on the inside.

Here are two good reasons to upgrade to a RAV4:

  1. There are six different trim levels to choose from, and each is stylish and modern with unique features. Whether you go with the LE, XP Trail, XLE, XLE Premium, Adventure, or Limited you will surely have plenty of comfort, style, and technological options to choose from. Plus, there are six vibrant color options available—you could buy one in every color!
  2. Just because the RAV4 is the smaller sibling doesn’t mean it isn’t spacious. Inside, the RAV4 has two comfortable rows of seating with room for up to five people (comfortably). For stowing in the back, there are nearly forty cubit-feet of space, which allows for plenty of room for groceries, luggage, band equipment, etc.

…and here are a few more reasons:

  • 27/35 estimated miles-per-gallon
  • Comes with a 7-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, AppleCarPlay, and Amazon Alexa
  • Integrated backup camera with Projected Path
  • 17-inch steel wheels

There are plenty more cool features to the new Toyota RAV4, and we have plenty on the lot and online for you to look through. Now, let’s have a look at a top-of-the-line SUV, the Toyota 4Runner.

The 4Runner

Right now at Mount Airy Toyota, you can find deals on a 4Runner with incredible off-roading capability, tons of storage space, a tough V-6 engine, and optional third-row seating. This celebrated sport utility vehicle comes with a durable, boxy looking exterior with lights that slightly protrude to the side, and a front honeycombed grille. Inside, every piece of material is made to last, and there is plenty of space for you and the family. The dash is full and flowing, filled with buttons and knobs, but not at all busy—its expertly- designed frame puts everything in perfect position.

Two Reasons to Upgrade to the Toyota 4Runner:

  • The all-new 4Runner comes in ten different trim levels: SR5, Trail Special Edition, SR5 Premium, XP Predator, TRD Off-Road, Venture Special Edition, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, Nighshade Edition, TRD Pro—and they all come with the same color options as the RAV4.

Because the 4Runner has had so much success over the years as one of America’s most versatile and stylish SUVs, Toyota has created tons of options for you to choose from, all of them carrying their own special strengths and styles.

The new 4Runner also comes with all the best features:

  • LED headlights, taillights, and fog lights
  • WiFi Connect
  • Available part-time 4-wheel drive
  • 17-inch, 6-spoke alloy wheels with mud/snow tires
  • Toyota Safety Sense
  • Compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

It’s hard to decide which is the better vehicle, the RAV4 or the 4Runner, so we like to think in terms of which one fits best for your situation? Need that extra room and punch, go with the bigger sibling. Rather something to zip around town in, maybe do some light off-roading? The RAV4 is your ride.

Visit us online or come test drive both vehicles and get a feel for what type of upgrade you want.

What You May Not Know About the Toyota RAV4 and How it Stacks up Against the Competition

Toyota is no stranger to dominance. Models like the Camry, Corolla and Tacoma, among others, are consistently at—or near—the top of their class in terms of sales. So, it should come as no surprise that the Toyota RAV4 is yet again the best-selling compact SUV in the U.S. in 2020.

Perhaps the primary reason for the RAV4’s success is that it embodies what buyers love most about Toyota models: reliability, safety, and function. And it does so while looking handsome and refined, with just the right amount of ruggedness.

Indeed, these essential characteristics are enough to make any vehicle dominate the market. But there is much more to the 2020 RAV4 than meets the eye. With lots of hidden features and upgrades, the case for buying the compact SUV grows stronger with each detail.

Below, we’ll discuss some of the lesser-known features, as well as some of the most essential qualities that make the 2020 Toyota RAV4 such a stellar vehicle. And we’ll see how it stacks up against its most fierce competitors so that you can make an informed decision on which model is right for you.

DID YOU KNOW?

Now, let’s dive into some of those cool features that you may not have known about in the 2020 RAV4:

Digital Rearview Mirror

One of the coolest features of the 2020 RAV4 is its digital rearview mirror option. A camera is discreetly placed inside the back window, and a screen is embedded in the rearview mirror. By simply turning a switch at the bottom of the mirror, you can see an unobstructed view behind and to the side of the vehicle. Not only is this a neat feature, but it also increases safety, especially in times when rear visibility is obstructed from having a lot of passengers and/or cargo in the back.

Bird’s Eye View 360 Camera

The RAV4 camera system also includes the Bird’s Eye feature. This provides you with a clear picture in front, behind, and on the sides of the vehicle right there on the infotainment screen. Opt for the front and rear parking sonar, and you will be able to better navigate around potential obstacles like other vehicles, potholes, rocks, parking lot posts, signs, and so on.

Top-Notch Rearview and Overhead View Camera

These may not be quite as hidden as some of the other features, but the rearview and overhead views of the RAV4’s camera system are simply top of the class. With clear pictures on an eight-inch screen, you are well-equipped to navigate parking, backing up, and driving around other vehicles on the road without having to strain your neck or take your focus off the road ahead. Plus, there’s another awesome feature that allows you to see a simulated view of what your vehicle looks like to other drivers on the road.

JBL Sound System

JBL has long been one of the world’s leading audio equipment manufacturers. Simply put, its products offer some of the highest-quality sound you will find in any system. And you can opt for a JBL audio system in the RAV4 that comes with an 800-watt amplifier, a subwoofer, and 11 speakers in nine locations throughout the cabin.

Digital Instrument Display

There’s more impressive technology offered in the 2020 RAV4, including a hybrid digital/analog instrument cluster in front of the driver. A seven-inch digital display (or 4.2-inch, depending on the trim), shows the odometer, gear position, and other essential information, while the RPMs, fuel tank, and engine temperature are shown via analog gauges. This blend of digital and analog elements is as functional as it is aesthetically pleasing.

All-Wheel-Drive System

You can opt for Toyota’s Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD system on the 2020 RAV4. Not only can this system send 50% of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels, but it can also sense road conditions and distribute power to the left and right rear wheels accordingly for a perfect balance.

Huge Sunroof

If you want your RAV4 to feel especially open and airy, upgrade to the panoramic sunroof. This turns most of the roof into one big panoramic glass, which basically makes your RAV4 a convertible compact SUV—without the inconvenience of being an actual convertible, of course.

Eight-Inch Infotainment Screen

As previously mentioned, you can get an eight-inch infotainment screen in your RAV4. Not only is this touchscreen more sizable than many competitors, but the screen itself sits on top of the center stack, which adds appeal to the already-handsome cabin. Plus, the screen has physical shortcut buttons that make it as easy as possible to use while driving.

Class-Leading Cabin Quality

Speaking of the RAV4’s handsome cabin, it also happens to be made of the highest-quality materials that you will find in a compact SUV. And cabin ergonomics are also better than any of the RAV4’s competitors. Take one cruise in the RAV4, and it’s easy to see how much work Toyota put into making the driving experience enjoyable and safe. Along with an easy-to-use infotainment system, all other essential controls are easily identified and comfortably within reach.

The TNGA-K Platform

Toyota just started using its new TNGA-K global midsize platform for the RAV4. Until now, all RAV4s were built on the same compact platforms as the Corolla and Prius. Upping the size of the RAV4’s platform, which is also the one used for the Camry, adds a touch of aggression and makes for a better overall appearance. Plus, it’s designed to be lighter and offers a more confident driving experience.

ESSENTIAL FEATURES

The 2020 Toyota RAV4 also impresses when it comes to basic features pertaining to its performance, interior, exterior, safety, and technology:

Performance

Every RAV4 trim comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 203 horsepower (which is better than many others in its class) and 184 pound-feet of torque. This is matched with an eight-speed transmission that provides smooth and precise shifting. And while there is no turbocharged engine available, the 2.5-liter engine is well-suited for the job. Plus, if you need a little more oomph, you can throw the RAV4 into Sport mode, which will enhance throttle response and allow for the RPMs to rise a little higher before shifting gears.

Additionally, the RAV4 offers easy steering and is easy to maneuver in tight spaces. Moreover, it grips well around turns and rides smoothly on a variety of road conditions.

Interior

The interior of the 2020 RAV4 is truly something to behold, especially when compared to other vehicles in its class. Both the cloth and leather seating options are supportive and comfortable, and there’s room to comfortably fit five passengers, with impressive legroom and headroom in the front and back seats. Furthermore, the RAV4 provides 37.6 cubic feet of cargo space, which becomes 69.8 cubic feet when the back seats are folded down.

Safety

When it comes to safety, it’s hard to beat the 2020 RAV4. Along with a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), it was named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). On six of the IIHS crash tests, the RAV4 scored the highest rating of Good.

The RAV4 comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, which is a class-leading bundle of safety technologies. It includes the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist, Dynamic Cruise Control, and Automatic High Beams. There are also several optional safety features, such as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, reverse automatic emergency braking, and front and rear parking sensors.

RAV4 AGAINST THE COMPETITION

Compact SUVs make up one of the most popular segments among U.S. buyers, which means that competition is stiff. Let’s see how the 2020 Toyota RAV4 stacks up against some of its fiercest rivals:

Honda CR-V

Perhaps the RAV4’s biggest rival is the Honda CR-V, which is a great vehicle in its own right. The CR-V is known for providing drivers with a comfortable ride, an attractive interior, class-leading cargo space, and a ton of optional features.

On the other hand, the RAV4 also boasts an impressive interior (particularly the 2020 models), and it bests the CR-V in fuel efficiency, acceleration capabilities, and standard safety features and technologies. Both the RAV4 and CR-V are among the best compact SUVs on the market, and they both receive high marks for safety, reliability, and overall quality.

Therefore, it really comes down to what you want from your compact SUV. If interior comfort and cargo space are the most important factors to you, then the CR-V is a good option. However, many buyers find it difficult to pass up on the RAV4’s excellent fuel efficiency and more versatile options as far as off-road features and technologies go. Plus, with the RAV4, you get a vehicle that comes with Toyota’s unmatched reliability.

Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 is another one of the RAV4’s leading competitors. Also a great vehicle, the CX-5 is tailored more to consumers who are looking for a luxurious compact SUV without the luxury price tag. It also offers three different engines, including a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that’s good for 187 horses and 186 lb-ft of torque, a turbocharged version of that same engine, and a diesel engine.

Until recently, the CX-5 might have a leg up on the RAV4 in interior quality. However, Toyota has upgraded the RAV4’s interior so that it can hold its own against the competition. And the RAV4 beats the CX-5 in several categories, including fuel efficiency, reliability, ride and handling, and safety features and technologies. For the buyer who wants a well-rounded compact SUV that simply offers more, the RAV4 is a clear choice here.

Subaru Forester

Finally, the Subaru Forester is another respectable rival of the RAV4. The Forester, along with its sibling the Outback, have a sort of cult following among adventure seekers, much like the Toyota Tacoma. And there’s no getting around the fact that the Forester is a nice, modern, reliable vehicle. However, the RAV4 actually offers more in terms of adventure. It has a more impressive powertrain, it handles itself better on rougher terrain, and it even has two trim levels that are specifically designed for the road less traveled (the Adventure and TRD Off-Road).

It’s also worth noting that the RAV4 has an edge over the Forester when it comes to cabin materials and styling. And the RAV4 has many more standard safety features and technologies. While the Forester offers its fair share of features, most of them require upgrades that come with a hefty price.

Conclusion

If you were only to consider the features that follow Toyota tradition (e.g., reliability, safety, function, etc.), the 2020 Toyota RAV4 would stand out among the competition. But there’s even more to the RAV4 than those essential qualities. Consider some of the lesser-known features discussed above, and compare the RAV4 with its most formidable rivals.

Simply put, we like its chances. Now, the only thing left to do is to schedule a test drive at Mount Airy Toyota so that you can experience driving the 2020 RAV4 yourself!

3 Safety Tips for Carpooling During COVID-19

 Safe Carpooling

It’s that time of year—time to load up the minivan and take your kids and their friends to school. Obviously, this year is much different than others because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and one result has been the disruption of everyday routines for millions of Americans. And that disruption has carried over to the beginning of the academic year.

Even though many schools have already opened and others are soon to follow, there are a lot of questions as to how each school will operate. Some students will be attending classes in person full-time, some will be navigating online learning, and others will be doing a mixture of the two. And despite excruciating planning and strategizing, school systems across the country will be winging it to a degree since no one really knows how long the pandemic will last.

But one thing is for sure: Kids who are attending school need to be able to get there. And for many families, carpooling is the preferred mode of transportation. Fortunately, there are safe ways to carpool with your kids and their friends, even during the pandemic. From taking extra precautions to enforcing basic rules of the road, here are three tips for keeping everyone in your vehicle safe when carpooling this school year:

  1. Follow Pandemic-Specific Guidelines

The CDC recommends “avoiding pooled rides where multiple passengers are not in the same household.” But they have also recommended specific steps that you can take if walking, biking, or riding the bus is not feasible for your family and neighbors and carpooling is the only option.

First of all, any child or parent who is sick or has had known contact with someone who has coronavirus should stay home. Also, every person riding in the vehicle should wear a face mask or face covering, and each person should have their own bottle of hand sanitizer. Furthermore, to improve your vehicle’s ventilation, lower the windows, and make sure the vehicle’s ventilation system is on non-recirculation.

Another thing to consider is whether the little passengers outside of your household are in your children’s pandemic bubble. Schools are organizing students into classroom cohorts or pods in an attempt to prevent the spread of coronavirus, and it’s best to limit who rides in your vehicle to those who are already in your children’s groups.

Moreover, whether or not you should add kids who are not family to your carpool will also depend on how many passengers you have. For example, if you have a minivan or large SUV, you could have one child ride in the second row and one in the third row. However, the more passengers you have, the harder it becomes to practice social distancing. So, consider how many kids you have riding with you before adding any others.

  1. Practice General Vehicle Safety for Kids

Anytime you’re driving with children in the car, it’s essential that each child uses the proper seat. If your child is using a safety seat, make sure it’s in good condition and that it is installed and fastened correctly. And don’t rush to move your child up to the next car seat; it’s essential that they use the appropriate seat for their height and weight. If you are driving around kids who are in booster seats or using only a seat belt, make sure everyone has their seat belts fastened before you move the vehicle and that they keep them on until the trip is over.

Also, never let any two children share a seatbelt. And remember that any child under 13-years-old should always sit in the backseat, which helps protect them from potential injuries caused by passenger airbags.

  1. Stay Focused on the Road

Finally, the parent must always practice safe driving, especially when children are in the vehicle. No matter what, remain attentive, alert, and focused on the road and the vehicles around you. Make sure any kids who ride with you have a clear understanding of the safety rules and that they stay calm in the backseat so as to prevent distractions.

And for your part, never text on your phone while driving. Not only will doing so put you and everyone with you at risk, but it will also teach dangerous habits to the children under your care.

If you need to drive your kids and their friends to school this year, it’s essential to be mindful of the steps you should take. Remember to abide by the guidelines established by the CDC as closely as you can, enforce basic rules that help keep children safe on the road, and at all costs, remain focused while driving. At Mount Airy Toyota, we are care about the well-being of our customers, which is why we are committed to following all proper precautions necessary to keep a safe and healthy atmosphere. Following tips like these can help ensure a safe carpool experience, which means that everyone wins!

The Three Models in the 2020 Tacoma TRD Lineup—Which One Is Right for You?

The 2020 Toyota Tacoma comes from a long line of successful midsize pickup trucks and has garnered a loyal following from off-road enthusiasts over the years for its superb performance and reliability, among other factors. But the popularity of the “Taco” reaches far beyond the niche of those who take the road less traveled. In fact, it’s been the best-selling truck in its class for a decade and a half.

In particular, the TRD models make the Tacoma something to talk about year after year. And 2020 sees some notable upgrades that are sure to impress those who are in the market for a midsize pickup truck. To help you determine which truck will suit your needs, let’s discuss the new features and break down the three Tacoma models in the TRD lineup—the TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Pro:

NEW FEATURES

Toyota has gone to great lengths to make their vehicles safer. The Toyota Safety Sense P safety package comes on all 2020 Tacoma models. This includes High-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beams, and Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection. There are also two cabs available across all Tacoma grades: an extended cab (Access Cab) and a four-door cab (Double Cab).

All models are now compatible with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. Each model

above the SR grade, which includes all TRD models, comes with an eight-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system.

The TRD Tacomas receive perhaps the most extensive upgrades for 2020. The TRD Sport gets a Panoramic View Monitor, LED fog lamps, chrome insert tail lights, passenger Smart Key, and 17-inch wheels. TRD Sport buyers who opt for the V6 engine will also get a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and LED/DRL headlamps are available as well. Moreover, Toyota’s specially-tuned shocks come standard on the TRD Sport.

Step up to the TRD Off-Road, and you will get all of the features mentioned above with Bilstein tuned shocks in place of the Toyota shocks. And if you go with the Double Cab configuration, you will receive the Multi-Terrain Monitor, which gives you a view of the wheels and surrounding areas.

Not surprisingly, the 2020 Tacoma TRD Pro is the cream of the crop when it comes to taking adventures on rough terrain. Along with all of the off-road features of the TRD Off-Road model, the TRD Pro includes Rigid Industries LED fog lights, sequential LED/DRL headlamps, bold black-insert tail lights, and blacked-out 16-inch wheels. The new wheels are more than four pounds lighter than the ones on the 2019 models, and the suspension on the 2020 TRD Pro has been modified to complement the lighter wheels.

Also new on the 2020 Tacoma TRD Pro are two color options: Magnetic Gray and Army Green, the latter of which is exclusive to the TRD Pro grade. Super White and Midnight Black Metallic are also available, bringing the color options to four. Furthermore, Panoramic View Monitor and Multi-Terrain Monitor are standard for the TRD Pro, as are a JBL Premium Audio System and a 10-way power-adjustable driver seat.

2020 TOYOTA TRD SPORT

Now that you’ve seen some of the new stuff offered on all of the 2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD models, let’s take a more detailed look at the TRD Sport, which is consistently one of the best-selling pickup trucks in the country.

Unless you’re seeking off-road adventures, the 2020 Tacoma TRD Sport offers all the performance you could ask for. Coming standard are a sport-tuned suspension, rear-wheel-drive, and 2.7-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine. The four-cylinder is good for 160 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. Most buyers go for the optional 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque.

The TRD Sport is available with either a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission, and it can tow a maximum of 6,800 pounds. And buyers can also opt for a 4WDemand part-time four-wheel-drive system.

The interior of the 2020 TRD Sport seats up to four passengers. Though it may not include some of the luxuries offered in higher grades, the cabin of the TRD Sport makes for a comfortable ride while staying true to its rugged, sporty styling and materials that set it apart from other trucks on the market. And when it comes to legroom, there’s plenty to go around in both the front and back seats.

As far as the exterior goes, the 2020 Tacoma TRD Sport comes with an all-new grille, as well as 17-inch wheels and more chrome inserts throughout the entire body. Also, an aggressive hood scoop comes standard. Buyers who are looking for a midsize pickup that looks aggressive and sporty won’t be disappointed.

The Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport also comes with impressive technology features. Along with the eight-inch touchscreen, buyers get the Toyota Smart Key with Push Button Start, Toyota Entune 3.0 Premium Audio with Dynamic Navigation, and a Qi charging system for wireless devices. Starting at $32,745, the 2020 Tacoma TRD Sport is considered by many critics to give Tacoma drivers the most bang for their buck.

2020 TOYOTA TRD OFF-ROAD

Going a step up to the TRD Off-Road grade is likely a good move for drivers who have a taste for the dirt and hills. The 2020 Tacoma TRD Off-Road comes standard with the 3.5-liter V6 engine (278 hp and 265 lb-ft), as well as the automatic six-speed transmission, which performs efficiently and smoothly. This makes for easy passing on the highway as well as heightened performance on rough terrain. Of course, you can opt for the manual transmission, which many serious off-roaders prefer.

Also standard on the TRD Off-Road is the part-time four-wheel-drive system, a specially-tuned suspension, Bilstein shocks, and 16-inch wheels. A locking rear differential adds grip when the terrain gets challenging, and a hill-start assist feature helps prevent the truck from rolling backward on steep inclines.

Another impressive feature is Toyota’s Crawl Control; similar to cruise control, this feature allows you to program five different speeds so that you can keep the truck moving slowly and steadily around obstacles without having to worry about the pedals. Despite its stellar off-road performance, the TRD Off-Road offers a decent ride on pavement, with secure handling and body control.

Like the TRD Sport, the 2020 Tacoma TRD Off-Road’s interior is sturdy and rugged, and the cabin boasts well-made materials that will rival any competitor. However, the Off-Road grade makes it clear that you have stepped up a notch with a bright-red trim adorning the dashboard and soft plastic on the passenger side with an eye-catching crosshatch pattern.

The TRD Off-Road seats up to five passengers, and there is ample storage space throughout the cabin. Along with sizable door pockets, the truck offers plenty of storage in its glove compartment and center console, which includes several little cubbies.

2020 TOYOTA TRD PRO

When it comes to an aggressive, sleek appearance and powerful off-road performance, the 2020 Toyota TRD Pro is a midsize truck to dream about. Though it comes at a higher price, it offers the most for buyers. Here are some details to consider:

Performance

Like the Tacoma TRD Off-Road, the TRD Pro comes standard with the DOHC 24-valve Atkinson-capable 3.5-liter V6 engine. Zero to 60 mph measures at 7.3-8.1 seconds, while zero to 100 mph comes in at 21.22-22.6 seconds. The TRD Pro also comes with 16-inch wheels, Fox 2.5-inch-diameter internal bypass shocks, progressive-rate leaf springs, a TRD exhaust system, skid plates, a two-speed transfer case, and a signature snorkel that allows for better airflow to the engine when navigating deep water.

Every aspect of the 2020 Tacoma TRD Pro was designed with the trails in mind. And it shows. The Tacoma TRD Pro’s 35-degree approach angle and 9.4 inches of ground clearance outdo competitors like the Ford Ranger and Chevrolet Colorado, and vertical slopes are tackled with minimal effort. Furthermore, the six-speed automatic transmission is surprisingly responsive and smooth on the trail.

Interior

In the cabin, the TRD Pro comfortably accommodates taller drivers despite the high cabin floor that gives the truck its impressive ground clearance. Also, a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat allows you to adjust the seat height until it suits you perfectly. And the Tacoma TRD Pro boasts uber-comfortable leather seats with attractive stitching and “TRD” emblems. You will also get a moonroof standard.

Exterior

For its outer appearance, the 2020 Tacoma TRD Pro offers even more aggressiveness than its other TRD siblings. It’s distinctive exterior leaves no room for mistaking it as any other truck. This is accomplished with a large grill, flared fenders, and an upward kick in the rear window, among other features. In place of the Toyota logo is a vintage “TOYOTA” badge in the middle of the grille, and blacked-out trim, wheels, and rear-seat windows make for a mean-looking midsize pickup. The extra-beefy tires add some oomph as well.

The TRD Pro’s tailgate brings a touch of modernity with a big “TOYOTA” stamp on the bottom of the tailgate. This is balanced with a raised ride height and shorter bed, which resembles the proportions of more classic pickup trucks. And let’s not forget the slew of “TRD” logos boldly adorning the truck’s exterior.

DECIDING WHICH TRD MODEL IS RIGHT FOR YOU

When it comes to deciding between the 2020 Tacoma TRD models, it all depends on what you’re hoping to get out of your pickup truck. On the inside, all the TRD models are quite similar, though the TRD Pro offers some minor touches that set it apart. Nonetheless, performance and exterior appearance should be the deciding factors.

The TRD Sport is simply a great-looking truck, it’s really fun to drive, and many buyers find that it offers the best all-around value. It does everything you would want a sporty pickup truck to do when on normal roads, especially when equipped with the 3.5-liter V6 engine. But if you plan to take the road less taken, the TRD Off-Road or TRD PRO are the better options.

With the TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro, the wheel size drops to 16 inches, which lends itself to better performance on rough terrain. You will also get an off-road traction control system, several terrain modes, specially-tuned shocks, and a locking rear differential, among many other features designed to enhance your off-roading experience.

The TRD Off-Road is truly the middle ground of the TRD grades. Despite its name, it provides a slightly more comfortable ride on pavement than the TRD Pro. On the trails, however, the TRD Pro outperforms the TRD Off-Road in every aspect. Both of these models look mean and sleek on the outside, but the TRD Pro is unmistakably more aggressive.

Conclusion

If you’re in the market for an attractive, functional, and reliable midsize pickup, any of the 2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD models will do the trick. Which model is right for you all comes down to your preferred features and the type of activity you will be using the truck for. 2020 Toyota Camry TRD—It’s the Real Deal

Sheer power may not be the first thing to come to mind when you think about the Toyota Camry—until now. Sure, it’s been America’s best-selling passenger car for the past 17 years. But in general, Camrys usually sell because of their reliability, looks, well-rounded performance, and value.

Enter the 2020 Toyota Camry TRD. While still offering exceptional value, this new model puts the Camry in the conversation as a real sports car. With more aggressive looks and performance, it might reach a new market of buyers—those who are looking for a sleek sports car that’s safe, doesn’t guzzle gas, and will still run like new in 20 years.

Let’s get into some of the features offered by the 2020 Toyota Camry TRD:

Driving and Performance
The Camry TRD still provides the comfortable drive that Camry fans have grown to love. However, the modified chassis dynamics make for a midsize sedan with more precise steering and superb body control, especially around corners.

All current Camrys are based on the TNGA-K platform, which provides sufficient torsional rigidity in its own right. Add the TRD treatment of extra underbody bracing, stiffer coil springs, thicker anti-roll bars, specially-tuned shocks, and bigger front brakes, and performance goes to another level. The Camry TRD also gets 19-inch summer performance tires and reduced ride height (0.6 inches), both of which help the car stick to the road around turns.

Buyers of the Camry TRD will get a 3.5-liter V6 engine that’s good for 301 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque. Toyota’s D-4S dual fuel injection is present, which means that both multiport and direct injectors are used. The engine is matched with a Direct Shift eight-speed automatic transmission.

Exterior Design
The Camry TRD’s exterior styling is, in a word, aggressive. The subtlety usually present in the family versions of the sedan is gone. Riding with a flashy, pedestal-mounted rear wing, the car rocks a body kit that emphasizes aerodynamics—complete with ground-effect rockers, dynamic front and rear fascias, a mean-looking dual exhaust, and flat-black 19-inch alloy wheels that are exclusive to the TRD. And the airfoils found on the front and back of each wheel opening add a nice touch.

More black adorns the front grille and badging and is offset by red brake calipers. Moreover, buyers who opt for the Barcelona Red Metallic paint job will get blacked-out window trim and mirror caps, along with a gloss-black roof. Simply put, the Camry TRD’s exterior looks fast. Even when parked, it’s easy to imagine it speeding down the highway.

Interior Design
The same aggressiveness is found in the Camry TRD’s interior. In place of the family-friendly features that other trims offer are aluminum race-style foot pedals, red seatbelts, and Toyota’s comfortable Softex-covered seats, which combine the trademark black leather-like material with a red-black cloth scheme. TRD logos adorn the floor mats, leather gear shifter, and seatbacks, while red stitching runs along several areas of the cabin.
The sportiness of the Camry TRD doesn’t sacrifice the comfort that drivers love about the mainstream Camry models. Though the cockpit is more driver-centric than the more traditional trims, high-quality soft-touch materials make for a cabin that feels much more upscale than the price reflects.

There is also ample headroom, legroom and cargo room throughout. Along with a 15.1 cubic-foot trunk, the Camry TRD’s back seat folds down for hauling longer items, and there is plenty of storage offered by the glovebox and center console bin, among several other compartments that hold miscellaneous items.

Safety and Technology

Even given the beefed-up performance and appearance of the 2020 Camry TRD, the sedan is still one of the safer vehicles on the market. As with all the other Camry trims, the TRD comes stocked with Toyota Safety Sense, a safety package that includes several high-tech features, including:
  • Lane departure warning with gentle steering assist
  • Forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Automatic high-beam control
  • Backup camera with trajectory lines
  • Three years of Toyota Safety Connect (emergency roadside assistance, automatic collision notification, and stolen vehicle locator).
In addition to the suite of safety features, buyers of the Camry TRD will get Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and Android Auto compatibility with the infotainment system. Furthermore, a seven-inch touchscreen, six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth connectivity, and in-car WiFi are included.

Toyota is breaking new ground with the 2020 Camry TRD. Rather than simply being a family midsize sedan with an optional sport package, this model brings all the power and toughness that Toyota Racing Development can throw at it. So, if you’re looking for a legitimate sports car that still provides the comfort, reliability, safety, and all the other qualities Toyota is known for, then the Camry TRD could be the perfect vehicle for you.

Should You Get a 2020 RAV4 or 2020 Chevy Equinox? Here’s Some Information to Help You Decide

These days, compact SUVs have a lot more to offer than in times past. No longer do you have to sacrifice cabin space, features, and technology to get a vehicle that offers exceptional versatility and fuel economy.

While there are many vehicles to choose from in the compact SUV segment, the Toyota RAV4 and
Chevrolet Equinox are two of the most popular options among consumers. And for good reason—they both have qualities that appeal to a wide range of car buyers. The RAV4 is among the top of the class in several categories and is generally acclaimed as one of the best overall compact SUVs on the market. However, the Chevrolet Equinox has its own merits and comes at a below-average starting price.

If you’re on the lookout for a compact SUV that will best serve your needs, you’ve come to the right place. Below, we’ll discuss the 2020 Toyota RAV4 and 2020 Chevrolet Equinox in more detail so that you can determine which vehicle is right for you.

COMPARISON
Let’s take a brief look at some of the primary features offered by the 2020 RAV4 and 2020 Equinox:

The RAV4
As with previous model years, the 2020 Toyota RAV4 does not disappoint. Due to Toyota’s notorious reliability and general build-quality of all its vehicles, the RAV4 comes into any comparison at an advantage. However, there’s much more to the RAV4 than reliability and build quality. For starters, it’s one of the most attractive SUVs on the market, as it demonstrates the beautiful blend of modern and classic designs that are prevalent in all the newer Toyota models.

The 2020 RAV4 is also a very comfortable vehicle. In fact, its spacious cabin comfortably fits five passengers, leaves plenty of room for cargo, and makes it easy to forget that you’re driving a compact SUV. Then there’s the impressive power that comes with any trim level you choose, and a fuel economy (30 MPG combined) that rivals anyone in its class. And if you opt for the Hybrid, you get an SUV that is even more powerful and fuel-efficient (41 MPG city).

Furthermore, each RAV4 model performs better off the pavement than most of its competitors (especially the Equinox), and its off-road ability only increases in the Adventure and TRD Pro Off-Road trims.

In general, three of the main criticisms of the 2020 Toyota RAV4 are that it can get a little noisy in the cabin, it doesn’t come with a leather upholstery option, and the upgrades cost more than some of its competitors. However, these seem like trivial matters when you consider the advantages that come with the RAV4.

The Equinox
The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox is a sharp-looking SUV in its own right. Like the RAV4, it has ample space for five passengers, as well as different engines to choose from. The Equinox’s base engine is underwhelming compared to that of the RAV4’s, but buyers can opt for a 2.0-liter turbo engine that packs a punch and can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

Perhaps the most appealing aspect of the 2020 Equinox is its impressive list of driver-assistance features that come standard on all trim levels, which has earned the SUV a five-star safety rating. Also, the Equinox includes easy-to-use infotainment features, and it comes at a lower MSRP than the RAV4.

One thing to consider is that the 2020 Equinox is a little tight when it comes to cargo space, which limits the number and size of items you can take with you around town or on long trips. And its fuel economy isn’t competitive, nor is its ability to navigate rough terrain. Moreover, buyers who choose the cheaper upfront price of the Equinox will miss out on the top-notch quality and reliability of the RAV4.

MORE ON THE 2020 TOYOTA RAV4
Now that you’ve seen the 2020 Toyota RAV4 and 2020 Chevrolet Equinox side-by-side, let’s dive into some more details on the RAV4 so that you can determine whether it’s a nice fit for your lifestyle:

The Outside
While the RAV4 has been touted for its looks for several generations, the most recent versions are getting even more attention. Toyota has said bye to the soft, round look of previous RAV4 models, going instead with an overall appearance that is much more aggressive and rugged. This is accomplished by employing hard angles, bold lines, and SUV-style cladding.

What’s more, this appeal comes with the RAV4 at every trim level. And buyers of the all-new RAV4 TRD Off-Road will get an even tougher appearance, as it features black wheels, all-terrain tires, and an optional Lunar Rock body with Ice Edge Roof.

The Inside
Toyota has gone to great lengths to improve the interior of the RAV4. Using higher quality materials than in years past, the cabin prioritizes function over form, which matches it perfectly with the SUV’s exterior. However, soft materials throughout the cabin add just the right amount of comfort.

Though there is no option for leather upholstery, buyers can opt for seats wrapped in Toyota’s SofTex leatherette material, which feels convincingly like real leather. Also, the seats in the 2020 RAV4 are very comfortable, and they provide excellent thigh and back support, making for an enjoyable road trip or off-road adventure. Furthermore, the cabin provides ample legroom for passengers in the front and back.

When it comes to cargo room in a compact SUV, the RAV4 is hard to beat. With the rear seats up, there are 37.6 cubic feet of cargo volume. When the seats are folded down, that number becomes 69.8 cubic feet.

While these figures are competitive among compact SUVs, the storage compartments in the RAV4 are perhaps what’s most impressive, as they have been expertly designed to maximize space. Take, for instance, the shelf that runs along the dashboard or the wireless charging pad in front of the gearshift. And though the center console bin is not big, it is surprisingly deep when opened, leaving adequate space to store a variety of items.

The Powertrain
The 2020 RAV4’s powertrain is quite impressive. Coming standard on all trims is a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. For compact SUVs equipped with a base engine, this puts the RAV4 among the highest in horsepower ratings. Drivers will enjoy good acceleration and passing power. While there is no turbocharged engine available on the RAV4, the hybrid model puts out 219 hp.
All RAV4 models come with an automatic eight-speed transmission. The transmission shifts smoothly, and when in Sport mode, it provides a little extra snap.

It’s worth noting that the powertrain’s performance in the RAV4 is taken to the next level with the TRD Pro Off-Road trim. While it uses the same engine and transmission, the added features make for superior capability in off-road settings when compared to others in the compact SUV segment. These features include a Multi-Terrain traction system, Dynamic Torque Vectoring all-wheel-drive system, a specially-tuned suspension, 8.6-inch ground clearance, a hill descent control system, and all-terrain tires.

Driving Performance
Along with excellent powertrain performance, the RAV4 offers a driving experience to be reckoned with. It achieves secure, well-weighted steering while also providing decent feedback from the road (or rougher terrain). On most common terrains, drivers can expect a smoother and more comfortable ride than most of the RAV4’s competitors, which many people find surprising since ruggedness is part of the SUV’s charm. Moreover, the braking is responsive and reliable.

Safety
As with any vehicle, safety is of paramount importance. The RAV4 offers superior visibility with its large windows and mounted side mirrors, which allow for better sightlines of the front corners of the vehicle. When equipped with an adjustable rearview camera mirror and 360-degree surround-view camera system (which includes a perimeter-view capability), visibility is even more impressive.
No matter what trim level you choose, the RAV4 comes with Toyota’s Safety Sense 2.0—an industry-leading package of advanced driver-assistance features. Here are some of those features:
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Lane-departure alert with lane-keeping assist
  • Forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection
Buyers can also opt for a blind-spot alert with rear-cross traffic warning.
The 2020 RAV4 received a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for its crash tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) designated it as a Top Safety Pick.

Infotainment Features
All 2020 RAV4 models come with impressive infotainment features. Included in the infotainment system is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, a 4G LTE hotspot, and a seven- or eight-inch touchscreen (depending on the model). Optional add-ons include navigation, a wireless charging pad for devices, and a JBL premium audio system. Even if you don’t get a model that comes with navigation, you can use Scout GPS Link to display your smartphone’s GPS system to the touchscreen.

Fuel Efficiency
Last but definitely not least: the 2020 RAV4 offers exceptional fuel efficiency. Front-wheel-drive models provide an estimated 35 MPG on the highway (30 MPG combined), while all-wheel-drive models fall just shy of those numbers at 33 MPG highway and 29 MPG combined. Buyers of the RAV4 Hybrid will get 38 MPG on the highway and 40 MPG combined.

MORE ON THE 2020 CHEVROLET EQUINOX
The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox also comes with decent fuel efficiency, though it’s not as impressive as that of the RAV4. Equipped with the base engine, drivers can expect 31 MPG on the highway and 28 MPG combined. Other attractive aspects of the Equinox are that it provides great handling capability, a smooth ride, an easy-to-use infotainment system, and a solid predicted reliability rating. If these are the primary features you’re looking for, and you don’t care about cargo space or quality materials in the cabin, then the Equinox isn’t a bad choice as a compact SUV.

The base model of the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox (L) comes in at $23,800. That number might be enticing to the causal consumer, but the L model is usually only available through custom order, which means that you will have to wait for it to be built. And if you go up a tier to the LS, which you can find at almost any dealer, you won’t get many more features, and the charm of the low starting price diminishes. If you decide that you want an Equinox, your best bet is to go with the LT, as it provides some nice luxuries without adding too much to the price and offers a wider variety of option packages.

The Bottom Line
The compact SUV segment is one of the most popular among consumers in this day and age. And with so many options to choose from, determining the best make and model for you can seem overwhelming.

With that said, the 2020 Toyota RAV4 and 2020 Chevrolet Equinox are two of the most popular compact SUVs on the market today. And after comparing them, the RAV4 seems to be the superior vehicle on almost every front. However, you shouldn’t take our word for it.
